Bahamian-born, world music artiste Stefan the Scientist Moss will know this Sunday if his hit song "Higher" secured him a GMA Dove Award in the Special Event Album of the Year category, when the “Grammys of gospel” takes place at the Grand Ole Opry. Additionally, "My", the song Stefan the Scientist worked on with Michael “Verbs” Boyer and Lewis “Proxy” Brown is also up for a separate Dove Award.
The nominations are some of the 2010 highlights for the artiste who has just wrapped shooting the video for "My" in Detroit, touring Canada, planning to return to Nassau, Bahamas for "Youth Alive" in July and releasing his album "Origins" this fall.
“I’m really excited about Higher which is a part of the Hip Hope 2009 compilation,” said Stefan. “Some other well known people are on the album like Toby Mac, Canton Jones, Speech (of Arrested Development), Braille, Pettidee and BReith, to name a few," he said.
The Dove Awards are the top of the ladder for gospel music, so the artist has expressed his excitement at the potential for the song "Higher". "My lovely singer, pianist, violinist wife Tesia Moss sings with me on the track and she’s sung background vocals on all of my previously released songs as well,” he stated.
The Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards were created in 1969 by the Gospel Music Association to honor the outstanding achievements in Christian music . The awards, representing a wide variety of musical styles, including metal , pop , rock , rap & hip hop , country , gospel , and praise & worship , are presented annually in Nashville ,Tennessee . This year’s live show will be viewed on Sunday, April 25 at 8pm. Some of this year’s nominees include Mary Mary, Hezekiah Walker & LFC, Donnie McClurkin and Smokie Norful.
Stefan won his first Dove Award in 2005 for "Hittin’ Curves", a collaboration with hip hop duo Grits in the Rap/Hip Hop recorded song of the year category.
His song The Cure was featured on the Speckled Goats compilation in 2008. This included, among other well known artists, Tony Williams (from Kanye West’s G.O.O.D music), and DJ Maj (who currently tours with Toby Mac of DC Talk). Lady Love, that he co-wrote with Connecticut based artist, Doxa that made it to the finals of the International Songwriting Competition back in 2004.
Some of his other early projects include University of Hard Knocks with Manifest and his Dunamus Soundz Records that was nominated for a Marlin Award in 2003. As a member of Ekklesia in 1996, he won his first Marlin award for the song "Nuthin’ But The Blood" and his second Marlin for "The Rapture" as a member of the group Supernatural.”
Despite living in Atlanta, Georgia for the past few years, Stefan the Scientist continues to connect with his Bahamian roots. He recently sat down with Bahamian pop star TaDa on her radio show Artovation to talk about his career and the artists he’s collaborated or shared the stage with. Among them are TaDa herself, plus Sammi Starr, Manifest, Ricardo Clarke, Landlord, Peter Runks, Christian Massive, Monty G, DJ Counsellor and Mr. Beeds.
