Roots & Culture is an offshoot of “Express Yourself” an open mic show which has been in existence for four years [EY].
EY has provided a forum for talented Bahamians for four years and is still an active enterprise.
In 2007 Its creator, Nadine Thomas-Brown, decided that this forum did not fully showcase the talent that abounds in the country and decided that a TV show would do much more for those who were now doing videos etc. but had nowhere to showcase them. The show spent a year and a half exclusively on ZNS and an equal amount of time on Cable.
The Bahamas is a hot bed of untapped talent. The talent embodied in all classes of Bahamians has had previously, little to no exposure on the air or on television, save for a select few.
As a performer and a former reporter for the Guardian I have frequently heard cries that aside from Rake and Scrape music and Junkanoo there is really no place for other Bahamian performers in other entertainment genres to expose their work, hence the relevance of Roots and Culture. It is the only TV show which consistently features young popular Bahamian singers, designers, tastemakers etc.
Now on Cable Chanel 12 Roots and Culture showcases the talent of people throughout the Caribbean and especially the Bahamas, through insightful interviews, live performances and music videos as well as entertainment news.
Last season featured rising local young stars such as, Bodine Johnson, as well as Crab, a spoken word artist, Sosa & Mdeez, Sammi Starr, Puzzle Padrino and more. We have featured international acts such as Kareem Mortimer, Rita Marley, Tessane Chin, Mr Vegas, Allison Hinds & Mr Tempo.
Roots and Culture seeks to place additional attention on places that drive the entertainment Industry such as nightclubs as well as highlight fashions, trends etc. The show may be seen on both stations presently.
